Box Score KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBCO Heat were topped 66-48 on home court by UFV Sunday at the UBCO Gymnasium, as the Cascades were able to come out on top in the defensive battle.
Maddy Gobeil had a dominant game for the Cascades, ending the matchup just two steals short of a triple-double. The second-year from Kamloops, B.C., recorded 16 points, 13 rebounds, and eight steals.
After a low-scoring first quarter, the tone of the game was set as a physical defensive tussle. UFV was able to lock up the paint, where UBCO's slashing guards have found success this season. The Cascades' defensive tactics were successful as the Heat were held to under 60 points for the first time this season.
Kelsey Falk, of Vernon, B.C., would have five points and 15 rebounds before exiting the game in the fourth quarter due to injury. After her departure, UFV would go on a 15-5 run to end the game.
The Heat's leading scorer was Vancouver's Surprise Munie, who finished with 12 points. The rookie guard's 14.9 points per game this season is on track to be the highest average in the program's history.
Rachel Hare, a local of Kelowna, making her second start in as many games, poured in 10 points, her most in a Heat uniform. The third-year guard also chipped in with eight boards, three steals and two assists while shooting 4-of-5 from the field.
UFV would shoot 38.7 percent on Sunday's matinee game, while the Heat struggled with a season-low 27.9 percent mark.
The win proves to be Fraser Valley's fourth consecutive as they chase the under undefeated TWU Spartans for tops in the West division. The Cascades now sit at 7-1 on the year. UBCO's second straight loss sees their record fall to 4-6 for the 2021-22 season.
The Heat will not have to wait long to get back in action as they return to the court on Thursday as the UBC Thunderbirds come to town. The two teams meet for the third time this season with each having picked up a win back in November in Kelowna.
Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. and tickets for the game can be purchased 30 minutes prior to tipoff.
