Box Score KELOWNA, B.C. - Playing in front of a near capacity crowd at their first Pride Night, the UBC Okanagan Heat's women's volleyball team shook off the rust of a long layoff to dispatch the visiting Thompson Rivers WolfPack 25-20, 18-25, 25-14 and 25-21.
Having not played a competitive match in nearly two months due to postponements earlier this month, Heat struggled to hold momentum as the points scattered back and forth between the teams through the opening two sets. After the Heat won a close first set, TRU took the lead early in the second set and ultimately cruised to the set victory to even up the match.
Regrouping after the set loss, the UBCO Heat brought the spice and took the last two sets in convincing fashion to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Second-years Sydney Grills and Amaya Perry were both strong competitors at the net this evening for the Heat. Grills, a native of Vancouver, once again led the Heat in kills on the evening as she posted 16 to go along with a .353 hitting percentage.
Meanwhile, Perry added 12 kills to go with three service aces, two blocks and two digs.
Erin Mutch of Victoria, led the way for the WolfPack as she posted a game-high 17 kills, five aces and three blocks to record 23.5 points for her team.
With the victory, the Heat maintain pace with the Trinity Western Spartans (6-1) as the two squads remain tied for first place in the Canada West West division. As for TRU, they remain winless on the season with an 0-9 record.
The two teams will wrap up their season series on Saturday afternoon when they square off at the UBCO Gymnasium. First serve is set for 3 p.m. and tickets for the game can be purchased at the door starting at 2:30 p.m.
