Early deficit sinks women's basketball against Trinity Western

Box Score

LANGLEY, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat women's basketball team suffered a tough 81-56 loss at the hands of the Trinity Western Spartans Friday night, as their inconsistent offensive performance stymied any comeback attempt.

It was difficult for the Heat to find their offensive rhythm, as they only saw one basket go down in the first five minutes. With a slow start, the Heat dug themselves a hole while Trinity Western shot lights out all night. It could be said that the Spartans had "one of those games," as the team shot 50 percent from the field, which makes it hard for any team to defend.

First-year guard Surprise Munie of Vancouver, was the Heat's rock throughout the match, ending with 18 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Munie has been a cornerstone to the Heats offence all year, and tonight was no different. Jaeli Ibbetson of Kelowna B.C., aided her guard by adding 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

Strong performances from two of the Heat's most consistent contributors were not enough to get the job done. Nicole Fransson of Edmonton, had a night for the books. The third-year forward filled the stat sheet with 21 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

The Heat were inconsistent tonight which is a dangerous way to play. They found themselves in a 20-point hole but were able to real it back to just 10, before seeing it evaporate. The third quarter ended in an even 20-20 draw, but careless turnovers were what kept the Heat from gaining the momentum they needed to win.

The Heat will get their chance at redemption Saturday at 3 p.m. as they will run it back against the Spartans and aim for a different result.
