Brutto, Munie's career-nights push women's basketball past Timberwolves

Box Score

KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBCO Heat women's basketball team, coming off a pair of losses, needed to get back in the win column against the UNBC Timberwolves and a 28-point second quarter helped them do just that Saturday afternoon at the Furnace.

After UNBC utilized an 8-0 run to grab a sizable lead after the first quarter, the Heat would explode for a much-overdue high-scoring frame. Led by Alessia Brutto, making her first appearance of 2022, UBCO would outscore the T-Wolves 28-10 in the second, securing a 10-point lead going into the half.

Brutto, of Bassano Del Grappa, Italy, had seven of her 17 points in the second quarter, as she set a new career-high for scoring.

Rookie guard Surprise Munie of Vancouver, continued her strong play of late, recording her first career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Kelsey Falk, of Vernon, B.C., and Jaeli Ibbetson, of Kelowna, B.C., each were one point short of a double-double with nine points each. Falk grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds, Jaeli was right behind with 11.

For UNBC, the Russian duo of Alina Shakirova and Svetlana Boykova were the team's top performers. Both from Moscow, Russia, they combined for 28 points, as Shakirova went 10-of-10 from the foul line.

The Heat topped a pair of program records on Saturday, for FG made (33) and attempted (86) in a single game. UBCO shot 38.4 percent in the game topping UNBC's 35.6 percent

The win puts the Heat only one game below .500 at 5-6 on the year, while the Timberwolves, who are winless in their last four, fall to 4-5 for the season.

The Heat victory also pushes the team past the Timberwolves in the West division standings, into third place

UBCO Head Coach Bobby Mitchell is proud of his team for battling against roster insecurities, game cancellations and rescheduling's, saying despite the adversity his team was able to be prepared for the matchup.

"This past week of practice was one of our best which set the tone for today's game. I'm looking forward to getting back to work next week and getting set for the Timberwolves again."

Next weekend UNBC will return to the Furnace for a pair of games against the Heat. Friday's game is slotted for 5 p.m. while the two team's will meet at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
