Women's volleyball topped by Thunderbirds in straight sets

Box Score

KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat's women's volleyball fell to their sister-school, the UBC Thunderbirds, at home on friday night in three sets, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-15.

Despite the T-Birds' three set victory, it was a close fight the whole match. The Heat trailed by no more than two points throughout the first set until the T-Birds pulled away to secure the first set victory.

Starting the second set off slow, the Heat found themselves trailing 18-10. However, UBCO mounted a spirited comeback, buoyed by a crowd of over 500 spectators, and closed the eight point deficit to 24-23.

However, a kill from Claire Cossarini of Calgary, would put an end to the rally as the Heat dropped the second set.

In the third, UBCO simply ran out of steam as the T-Birds cruised to the victory.

Reigning Canada West Rookie of the Year Amaya Perry from Chin, Alta., led the Heat in the contest contributing 12 kills and nine digs. For the Thunderbirds, it was Cossarini who posted an impressive showing with 11 kills on 15 attacks.

With the three set victory, the UBC Thunderbirds improve to 3-2 in the Canada West West division standings while the Heat dropped to a 4-1.

The two teams return to the Furnace for more action Saturday with a start time of 3 p.m . Tickets for the game can be purchased at the gate starting 30 minutes before the match.
