Box Score VICTORIA B.C. - Despite a tenacious performance from Kevin Hamlet on both ends of the court, the UBC Okaganan Heat men's basketball team lost 88-80 to the Victoria Vikes on Saturday night.
The Heat got off to a hot start, leading by 14 at the end of first, getting contributions from Gus Goerzen, from Roberts Creek B.C., who was feeling confident from behind the arc. Georzen finished the night with 13 points including three three pointers.
However, the Vikes would slowly chip away at the lead and eventually the two teams would find themselves tied late in the contest. Despite their best efforts, the Vikes pulled ahead and came out on top, handing the Heat their fourth straight loss to start the year.
Kevin Hamlet, from Scarborough Ont., led the way for the Heat over the course of the game, pouring in 20 points while shooting 50 percent from the field. He played well on the defensive end, frustrating the Vikes offence by drawing charges and making the scrappy plays.
Diego Maffia, from Victoria B.C., was the top scorer for the Vikes, putting up 26 points, followed by Calgary product, Matthew Ellis who ended the night with 14 points.
Next on the schedule for the Heat is their home opener on Friday, November 12 against their sister school, the UBC Thunderbirds. The game kicks off an eight-game homestand for UBCO which stretches all the way into 2022.
Tickets for home games can be purchased at The Furnace with sales starting 30 minutes before game time.
