CALGARY - Over the weekend, the UBC Okanagan Heat men's basketball team took on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, the Mount Royal Cougars, and the Manitoba Bison on the road to wrap up preseason action.
On Friday, the Huskies took the win over the Heat 97-73, then on Saturday, the Heat topped the Cougars with a 100-90 victory. The final game of the weekend on Sunday was a tight match which ultimately ended in a 92-90 loss against the Bisons.
Leading the offensive charge for the Heat against the Huskies was Kevin Hamlet of Scarborough, Ont., with 15 points, followed by Las Vegas, Nev., product, Jesse Vogel, who put up 14 points in the losing effort.
Vogel would push the Heat to victory over the Cougars on Saturday as he put up a total of 18 points. The offensive effort was furthered by Roberts Creek, B.C., products Elan Kimpton-Cuellar with 17 points and Gus Goerzen with 16 points.
All four of the previously mentioned student-athletes would once again lead the Heat in points in the final game of the weekend affair against the Bisons. This time, however, Goerzen would lead the charge with 16 points, followed up by Kimpton-Cuellar who put up 15 points for UBCO. Vogel and Hamlet would both finish the game with 13 points each.
The Heat's regular season will begin on Friday, October 29th as they travel down to Abbotsford, B.C., to face the UFV Cascades at 8 p.m. All action can be watched live at CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op.
