HEAT THIS WEEK: Soccer honours graduates at home; softball heads to nationals

KELOWNA, B.C. - Six Heat teams are in action this Thanksgiving weekend, including men's and women's soccer at home against the UNBC Timberwolves and UFV Cascades. Meanwhile, men's and women's cross country compete at the Western Challenge in Vancouver, , softball will battle for the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association (CCSA) national championship in Oshawa, Ont., and women's golf will tee off at the Western Washington Invitational in Bellingham, Wash.

Women's soccer returns home this weekend with a pair of matches, hosting the Soccer for Cancer initiative against the UNBC Timberwolves (0-7-0) before taking on the UFV Cascades (3-5-2) for the Graduating Athlete Celebration, where the Heat will honour graduating athletes Allyson Ford, Nina Louis, and Megan Sun.

Last weekend, rookie goalkeeper Jill Varney made a strong debut in her first career start, recording 11 saves across 90 minutes in a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Victoria Vikes (1-2-4). 

Heading into this weekend, the Heat (0-6-2) sit just above the Timberwolves in the Canada West Pacific Division standings, while the Cascades sit two spots ahead. The Heat hold an 11-5-7 all-time conference record against the Timberwolves, including a 3-0 victory last season. Against the Cascades, the Heat are 5-8-3, with their most recent meeting ending in a 2-2 tie in September. With history on their side, the Heat will hope to break into the win column this weekend.

The UBCO Heat (0-9-0) men's soccer team will also face UNBC Timberwolves (0-4-6) and the UFV Cascades (6-3-3). On Sunday, the Heat will celebrate graduating players Matthew Alexander, Carter Brown, Dario Fedele, and Ronan Woodroffe.

Last weekend, second-year defender Charlie Prefontaine scored the team's lone goal, converting a corner from Will Armitage in the 67th minute for his first goal of the season in a 2-1 loss to the Saskatchewan Huskies. 

Heading into Friday's match, the Heat hold an 8-9-5 all-time conference record against the Timberwolves and a 7-13-3 record against the Cascades. Having dropped both previous matchups against the two teams, the Heat will look for revenge as they continue to chase their first victory of the season.

Cross Country 
Saturday, Oct. 10 at Western Challenge | Vancouver, B.C. 

This weekend, the Heat cross country teams will travel to Vancouver to compete at the Western Challenge hosted by the UBC Thunderbirds. 

In their previous race, the Bill Roe Cross Country Classic, the men's team placed ninth, while the women's team secured fourth place. Third-year runner Abigail Yakemchuk led the women's team, finishing second overall with a time of 21 minutes and 2.8 seconds.

Softball (16-8-1) continues their road trip this weekend, as they head off to Ontario to compete against the nation's top eight teams at the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association (CCSA) National Championships, hosted by the Durham Lords.

Last weekend, the women competed in the Western Collegiate Softball Association (WCSA) Championships, where the Heat went 3-2 to take home silver. First-year second-base/shortstop Avery Lamb earned Athlete of the Week honours after a standout performance in her first WCSA Championship. Lamb drove in the game-winning run with a walk-off single in the extra eighth inning of UBCO's 4-3 tournament-opening victory over the Regina Cougars, and added a double to finish 2-for-2 on the day with two runs batted in (RBI).

At the 2025 CCSA National Championships, UBCO captured gold, going a perfect 5-0 and will be looking to secure their third consecutive title at this year's event.
 
Women's Golf

The women's golf teams will head to Bellingham, Wash., this weekend to compete against numerous National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II schools at the Western Washington Invitational, hosted by the Western Washington Vikings at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

UBCO is currently competing in the Canada West Championships at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge, Alta. The women sit in second place after the first round with an 11-over-par 232, just behind the UBC Thunderbirds, who finished the round at 224. InAlly Ruston (79) and Ayda Matthews (76) both were tied for sixth individually, followed by Kiana Chen in ninth, Julia Alexander-Carew in 10th, and Georgia McGregor tied for 16th. The team will hope to build on their position in the second round, as they look to carry momentum into next week's tournament.
