HEAT THIS WEEK: Basketball on home court, volleyball on the road as regular season comes to a close

The Heat basketball teams will host the Victoria Vikes as they get set to celebrate their graduating seniors while volleyball battles Wesmen in crucial games in Winnipeg

KELOWNA, B.C. - The final weekend of the Canada West regular season is here as the UBC Okanagan Heat basketball and volleyball teams play their final games before the playoffs.

For the Heat basketball teams, they'll be on home court taking on the Victoria Vikes where the women's team will be looking to lock down their playoff spot while the men look to give the top-ranked team in Canada all they can handle in their final games of the season.

Meanwhile, the Heat volleyball teams will be playing two big games each in Winnipeg against the Wesmen. The men's team has already secured a spot in the playoffs but will be battling for positioning as they can finish anywhere from fifth to ninth in the conference. As for the women, they will be fighting with the Calgary Dinos and Trinity Western Spartans to secure one of the two remaining playoff spots available in the conference.

The Heat return to the Furnace this weekend for their final home games of the 2024-25 season, facing a tough test against the U SPORTS No. 1-ranked Victoria Vikes.

Saturday's game will be a special one as the team honours their six graduating seniors: Jas Dhudwal, Jeffrey Tezo, Elan Kimpton-Cuellar, Jonathan Haughton, Gavin Ashworth, and Imoudu Ibrahim.

Last weekend, the Heat went head-to-head with the UBC Thunderbirds. On Friday, they battled fiercely, trading shots with their rivals but ultimately falling just short, 85-80. Leon Schenker led all scorers with a career-high 24 points. On Saturday, Lamine Conde followed with a career-high 31 points, the highest of the game across both teams. The second-year forward also set a career-best by making 10 field goals, and his 31 points mark the fourth-most ever scored in a single game in team history.

UBCO lost their only previous matchup against the undefeated Vikes, but limited the top team in the country to just 35 first-half points, a feat they'll be looking to repeat this weekend.

UBCO is back on home court, looking for a win or a UNBC loss over their final two games to secure a postseason spot for the fourth straight year. The Heat are gearing up for a playoff push and will look to use these games against Victoria this weekend to build momentum heading into a potential playoff run.

On Saturday, the team will celebrate Graduating Seniors Night, honouring Kelsey Falk, Abby Smith, and Lauren Foullong as they play their final home games of their Heat career.

Two players to watch coming into this weekend are rookie Tsuki Tsuzuki and Tennyson McCarthy. Tsuzuki made team history last weekend against the UBC Thunderbirds, setting the Heat rookie assist record and needs just three steals this weekend to set a new rookie steals record. Meanwhile McCarthy posted her first career double-double last weekend, grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds, and will look to build on that performance against the Vikes.

In their previous matchup on January 25 against the Vikes, the Heat came up just short, falling 70-65 on the road.

Women's volleyball is travelling out to the prairies this weekend as they have a crucial two game weekend against the Winnipeg Wesmen, continuing their fight for a spot in the 2024-25 Canada West playoffs.

Last weekend the women had a dominant weekend over the Regina Cougars as they swept in three sets back-to-back nights. Amaya Perry, a veteran outside hitter, broke three Heat records over the course of the two nights setting new highs for most aces, kills and points. Another standout player for the Heat was fourth-year outside hitter Olivia Tymkiw who set a personal high from the service line putting up four service aces.

Coming off of a bye weekend men's volleyball is rested and recharged as they head to Manitoba to face the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked Winnipeg Wesmen in an action packed double header to close out the 2024-25 regular season.

The last time the Heat were in action was two weekends ago where they suffered a pair of losses to the nationally-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies. Despite the losses, during the Saturday night four-set battle Lucas Woelders, a third-year opposite led his team putting down 13 kills, a hitting percentage of .333 which was his third time in five matches where Woelders achieved a kill tally of over 10.
