HEAT THIS WEEK: Volleyball hosts MacEwan, cross country competes at nationals

Heat volleyball hosts MacEwan for a weekend doubleheader, highlighted by the women hosting a School Day Game on Friday, while basketball travels to the Lower Mainland to face UFV and UBC, and Cross Country lines up to race Canada’s best

KELOWNA, B.C. - Volleyball action returns to the UBCO Gymnasium this weekend as the Heat women's and men's teams get set to face the MacEwan Griffins, while the basketball teams head to the Lower Mainland to take on the UFV Cascades and UBC Thunderbirds. Meanwhile, Cross Country travels to Quebec for the U SPORTS Championships.

The Heat women's volleyball squad returns home this weekend to face the MacEwan Griffins. Friday's match up will be the team's School Day Game, where local elementary and middle school students pack the gymnasium to cheer on the team, followed by a Saturday rematch.

The Heat fought hard against the nation's top-ranked Alberta Pandas last weekend, taking two sets off the number one team in U SPORTS. Kirsten Hill led Friday's effort with 12 kills on 24 swings, and a .458% while Natalie Funk added 14 kills and nine digs. On Saturday, Funk again led the team with nine kills and eight digs, and Kylan Finseth added 24 assists and two aces to keep the offence running.

Back in the national rankings for the first time since 2022, the Heat men's volleyball team sits at No. 7 in the U SPORTS Top 10 and returns home to host the MacEwan Griffins for a weekend doubleheader.

The Heat are coming off an impressive split with the third-ranked Alberta Golden Bears, taking a 3-1 win on Friday before dropping Saturday's rematch. Seba Manuel powered the offence in Friday's impressive victory with 17 kills, hitting .556, and racking up 19.5 points over the four sets to lead the Heat to their first-ever victory over Alberta.

Ranked eighth nationally, the Heat women's cross country team is set to take on Canada's best at the U SPORTS National Championships, with six runners eyeing the podium.

The Heat are coming off a strong showing at the Canada West Championships, where they earned their second consecutive team bronze. Lauren McNeil led the way, capturing individual gold to complete her Heat trophy case while teammates Sophie Hamilton and Tori Bouck also finished inside the top 14 to earn Canada West Second Team All-Star recognition. McNeil will also be looking to repeat as U SPORTS Champion after winning the event last year in Kelowna.

It's a thrilling weekend for Owen Lloyd, UBCO's lone men's representative and Canada West Second Team All-Star, who will take on Canada's top runners at the U SPORTS Cross Country Championships in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Lloyd is coming off the best performance of his career at the Canada West Championships in October, where he ran 26:30.2 to finish ninth in his fourth conference championship appearance. He will be looking to build on his performance at last year's event in Kelowna in his second appearance at the U SPORTS Championships.

Women's basketball team travels to the Lower Mainland this weekend to face the UFV Cascades and U SPORTS No. 4 ranked UBC Thunderbirds.

Last weekend, UBCO was on the road to face the Victoria Vikes, narrowly dropping Saturday's game 78-76 despite a strong fourth-quarter effort and 12 team steals. Kanani Coon led the Heat with 24 points, hitting four three-pointers and adding six rebounds.

Men's basketball team is also on the road this weekend, set to tip off against the UFV Cascades and U SPORTS No. 8-ranked UBC Thunderbirds.

Last weekend, UBCO dropped both games against the U SPORTS No. 1-ranked Victoria Vikes. On Friday, Jalen Shirley led the team's offensive effort with 20 points, shooting 8-for-19 from the field, sinking two three-pointers. This weekend will bring another tough test as the Heat look to bounce back against the two strong opponents.
