SOFTBALL
Â
The UBC Okanagan Heat softball team had a weekend of mixed results in Victoria this past weekend as they posted a 2-3 record while also having a game rained out.
Â
After Friday's night's contest against the host Vikes was cancelled due to rain, the Heat got off to a strong start on Saturday with a 14-6 win over Saskatchewan followed by a 4-1 victory over Victoria. However, that would be the end of their winning ways for the weekend as the team lost twice to Calgary, and suffered a loss to the Huskies, to see their record sit at 5-4-1.
Â
Notable performances for the Heat in Victoria came from 2023 WCSA Top Pitcher
Mikhaela Muir of Okotoks, Alta., who threw a complete game, one hitter against the Vikes, allowing just four hits while striking out 12. She also pitched four shutout innings, striking out six, against the Huskies in the Heat's narrow 3-1 loss on Sunday.
Â
Shortstop
Cheyenne Simicak of Surrey, B.C., had a monster game in the Heat's win over Saskatchewan as she went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. She would add four more hits over the weekend as she hit .462 in 13 plate appearances.
Â
With a .550 win percentage, the Heat now sit third in the WCSA standings, trailing Lethbridge (10-4-1) and Saskatchewan (9-4-3).
Â
The Heat will be right back at it with five more games this weekend in Lethbridge. UBCO will face the Regina Cougars twice, along with single matchups against the Mount Royal Cougars, Lethbridge Pronghorns and Victoria Vikes once.
