Doug Allin named head coach of Heat softball

Allin brings strong mixture of local and national coaching experience to UBCO as program’s next head coach

KELOWNA, B.C. – The UBC Okanagan Department of Athletics and Recreation is excited to announce the appointment of Doug Allin as head coach of the UBCO Heat softball program.

Allin, who will be the third head coach in program history, brings extensive coaching experience, both locally as well as at the national level, and playing experience to the position. He takes over from Michelle Webster, who stepped down from the role in October and was recently appointed as the Executive Director of PacificSport Okanagan.

"Softball in the Okanagan has an incredible amount of coaching leadership and we are once again privileged to be able to provide our student-athletes with a national level coach," said Heat Director of Athletics and Recreation Tom Huisman on the appointment. "Doug cares deeply about the players and continuing the great work of building the community of support our program needs to succeed on the field and to contribute back to the game."

"I feel very fortunate to represent UBCO as their head coach and look forward to continuing the legacy of the program," stated Allin on his appointment. "I am looking forward to working hard with the student-athletes to build a Canadian championship team in the coming seasons and to continue to build a program that the University and players can be proud to be a part of."

Allin joins the Heat with 10 years of experience coaching Softball Canada's men's national team. He began with the Canadian team in 2015 as an assistant coach for the men's senior team, a position he held up until this past year. During that time, he also took over duties as head coach of the U23 men's team in 2021, serving in both capacities.

In his roles, he helped guide Canada to a world championship in 2015, a silver medal in 2022, as well as bronze medals in 2017 and 2019. He also helped Canada win the silver medal at the Pan Am Games in Argentina in 2021.

Locally, Allin has served as head coach of many girls' softball programs in the Okanagan, including a three-year tenure with the Kelowna Heat from 2019-2022, as well as with the U19 Summerland Synergy in 2016 and West Kelowna's U16 team in 2015.

In addition to his coaching experience, Allin brings close to 20 years of playing experience to the Heat, having played with Squamish, Victoria, Vancouver and Portland Senior A teams, winning multiple provincial titles.

"I would like to acknowledge the hard work the past and current coaches, and administration, have done to build the UBCO softball program," added Allin. "Being a part of Softball Canada for the last ten years has allowed me to learn from some of the best coaches in Canada and develop my understanding of the game and I will bring this to the UBCO program to continue to develop our players."

Allin begins in his role immediately and can be reached at dougallin479@gmail.com
