HEAT THIS WEEK: Cross country competes at U SPORTS Championships; basketball on the road

The UBCO cross country teams are ready to battle the top teams in Canada while women's and men's basketball faces the UFV Cascades in Abbotsford

KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBCO Heat cross country teams take center stage this weekend as they get set to host their first-ever U SPORTS Championships, welcoming over 30 of the top teams from across Canada to Mission Recreation Park. Meanwhile, the Heat basketball teams look to continue their strong starts to the year against the UFV Cascades in Abbotsford while volleyball enjoys a bye weekend.

It's a big weekend for men's cross country as they welcome the best-running talent in Canada to their home territory to host the U SPORTS Cross Country Championships.

In their showing at the Canada West Championship in October, Owen Lloyd led the way for his team earning a 19th overall placement, the fourth-best finish in men's cross-country program history.

Women's Cross Country is heading into the U SPORTS National Championships ranked 8th nationally as they look to bring home some hardware against the best runners in the country.

The team showed up for the Canada West Championships as they collectively placed third as a team bringing home the bronze medal. Lauren McNeil led the way for her team by achieving a second-place finish and obtaining her second Canada West silver medal while Kristen Smith finished seventh.

Coming off their first-ever 2-0 opening weekend since joining Canada West, the women's basketball team is on the road this weekend as they prepare to tip off against the UFV Cascades.

Coming off their most successful opening weekend in program history, the team had multiple players who stepped up to help their team succeed. Tsuki Tsuzuki was outstanding in her first Canada West game for the Heat, dropping 17 points in just 24 minutes on the court. The first-year guard shot 7-for-13 from the field, including 3-for-5 from three-point range. Also shining for the Heat was one of this week's UBCO Heat Athletes of the Week Lily Pink, who averaged 14.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals as the Heat defeated the 'Pack on the road and knocked off UNBC on home court.

Following a split on opening weekend, men's basketball is heading to the Lower Mainland where they will face the UFV Cascades in a pair of weekend games.

Jalen Shirley was a key performer for the Heat this weekend as he recorded a near triple-double in their Friday night victory over the UNBC Timberwolves playing 37 minutes and finishing with 22 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. David Usuomon of Brampton, Ont. also put up an impressive performance off the bench pouring in 16 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
