Box Score 4 Welcome to our Heat Competitive Sport Clubs weekend recap where we'll look back at the results for our softball and men's rugby teams.
SOFTBALL
The UBC Okanagan Heat softball team used home field to their advantage this past weekend as they went a perfect 6-0 at High Noon Park to finish first place in the Western Collegiate Softball Association (WCSA) standings at the conclusion of the regular season.
The Heat posted three wins over the Mount Royal Cougars, outscoring them 26-1, two wins over the SAIT Trojans, outscoring them 17-6, as well as a big 11-4 victory over the Victoria Vikes.
The Heat were led once again by infielder
Cheyenne Simicak of Surrey, B.C., who wrapped up a monster season by going 8-for-9 at the plate, hitting two home runs, adding two doubles and driving in five runs.
The performance left Simicak with an impressive .510 batting average during the regular season, tops on the team, while also leading the Heat in home runs (five), doubles (nine) and RBI's (23).
Second-year
Kamryn Allin of Peachland, B.C., also had a strong weekend for the Heat, dolling out eight hits, including two home runs, along with three doubles and nine RBI.
On the mound,
Taylor McRae of Vancouver, Wash., led the way with nine and two-thirds innings pitched, allowing just one earned run while striking out nine.
UBCO will now head to Calgary where they aim to defend their WCSA title as the number one seed with a 14-6-1 record. Stay tuned to GoHeat.ca for the complete schedule for the weekend as it becomes available.
Men's Rugby
The UBC Okanagan Heat men's rugby team improved to 2-0 thanks to a blowout win over the SAIT Trojans in their home opener on Saturday at Parkinson Recreation Park.
The Heat got five first half tries to open the match, including a pair from
Jack McCallum of Bishopbriggs, Scotland.
Jef Vreys of Kelowna, B.C.,
Brendan Christian of West Kelowna, B.C., and
James van der Ross of Cape Town, South Africa all added singles.
McCallum would keep up his efforts in the second half, adding two more tries, while
Patrick Williams of Essex, England, and
Matthew Harris of Kelowna, B.C., added singles.
Armaan Dhaliwal of Abbotsford, B.C., successfully hit on six of his seven conversion attempts to record 12 points on the day for the Heat, to go along with four solo and two assisted tackles.
The Heat will now head to Calgary for two games in two days as they take on the University of Alberta on Saturday, October 5 and the University of Saskatchewan on Sunday, October 6.
