On Saturday, the same as in 2012, it was a Dinos try and convert to take the lead in the dying seconds of the game. This time to go up 24-20 on the Heat men's rugby team just before the final whistle that closed out the match.
Trailing 12-7 at the half, UBCO ran off 13-straight points behind the leg of Rhys James to take a 20-12 lead. James converted on Angelo Archilla's try and then he knocked in two penalty goals in the first 27-minutes of the second half.
Calgary scored a try and missed the convert five minutes after James last penalty kick, to narrow the Heat's lead to three, 20-17.
Just minutes later Calgary punched in a try to take the lead, banked in the sharp-angled convert kick and the whistle blew before the ball world return to play.
The opening 20-minutes of play was mired in the middle of the field until Calgary found a seam and busted a run down the left to open the scoring.
Quinn Baak, with a great running start, scored first for UBCO at the 40-minute mark. He broke through the line and touched down his try from eight yards out. James Scott kicked the convert to put the Heat up 7-5.
Just before the half, Calgary once again found a hole on the left side and scored a try but was unable to convert.
For the Heat, Rhys James named back of the match and Adam Fischer named forward of the match.
Calgary has now won back-to-back Hindson Cups and they have three in total. UBCO has kept the Cup in the Okanagan five times, and the University of Alberta is the only other university to earn a Cup victory.
The loss on Saturday will also help Calgary earn a higher seed and draw the lowest seed for the semi-final in next weekend's Western Championship. The loss will have the Heat face a tougher semi-final opponent. The winner of the Western Championship will be able to challenge the loser of the UBC UVic series for the second western Canada entry into the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship (CUMRC) held November 20-24 in Montreal, hosted by Concordia University. | More about the National Championship |
