Taking a year off last season as a co-op student in the electrical engineering program, Abigail Yakemchuk returned with her best result as a member of the UBCO Heat women’s cross country team. She placed second in a field of 85 runners at the Bill Roe Cross Country Classic in Ferndale, Wash., on Saturday. Yakemchuk crossed the finish line in 21 minutes, 2.8 seconds, just over 12 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Madeline Harrison of the Central Washington Wildcats. The Surrey, B.C., native helped the Heat finish fourth in a tournament featuring primarily National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II teams.Â
