PREVIEW: Fagan to race against U SPORTS best at national championship on Saturday

Kelowna, BC - The men's and women's cross country teams will face a step up in competition this weekend when they travel to the U SPORTS National Championship for the first time in their programs history.

The races will take place in Kingston, Ontario hosted by Queens University and the course will be 10km long for the men and the women's race will be 8km.

The Guelph Gryphons have been the undisputed kings of men's and women's cross country in Canada in recent years as they captured 12 straight titles on the women's side before Toronto got the win last year. Their men's team has also won 10 of the last 12 team championships including eight in a row at one point.

Women's team outlook:

Veronika Fagan will be the only female Heat runner in Ontario as the nursing student looks to win both the CCAA and U SPORTS individual titles. Fagan is coming off of a 10th place finish at the BC Championship just over a week ago and was the second fastest of the University level runners. Rookie Brittany Webster qualified for the event but will be unable to participate due to an injury. With Fagan set to graduate this June with her degree in the Science of Nursing this will likely be the last university race ran for the two-time UBC Okanagan female athlete of the year.

Coach's comments on Veronika:

"Veronika is very well prepared for Nationals.  In nearly every practice and race this season she has been significantly faster than she has run in previous years. She has raced on this course 2 years ago and is familiar with the course."

"The weather looks decent in the forecast with rain the day before.  If the course remains wet overnight then this course has a reputation of getting quite slippery when muddy."
