RECAP: Faster times at BC Championship for Heat runners

Improving on her 16th place finish last fall at the BC Cross Country Championships, Veronika Fagan, cruised to 10th overall on Saturday at Clearbrook Park in Abbotsford.

The annual race that serves as a measuring stick for BC based Canada West schools prior to the national championship and an event that will feature Olympians and future Olympians and professional runners.

Fagan, running the same route as last year at the championships, with just an extra lap added (4 laps in total) finished as the second university racer to cross the line in the 8-kilometres with a time of 26:43.

Fagan's impressive time allowed the women's team to finish third overall.

Coach John Machuga indicated that both teams "Raced significantly better than last year." Then Machuga described Fagan's race explaining that "She placed herself in a group of about a dozen professional runners and ran away from most of the university runners in the race."

Also running from the women's team was Sierra Cooper, an 18 year old (30:43) who placed 41st overall (12th the university portion of the race). Rylee Paulson (32:42, 46th, 13th), Nicole Chamberlain (32:51, 47th, 14th), and Danielle Mitchell (36:03, 53rd, 15th).

What's next:

Although, not sending the entire team, the Heat will have their biggest race of the year on Saturday, November 10th when Veronika Fagan and Brittany Webster will run the at the U SPORTS national championship, the first time at this event for UBC Okanagan.

The race will be held in Kingston, Ont. and hosted this fall, and next fall, by Queen's University.
