Tough start to 2019:

  • In their first conference action since the Christmas break, the Heat were unable to keep up with the No. 2 ranked Calgary Dinos last weekend as they fell in both games.
  • With 10 games remaining on the Canada West schedule, UBCO will need to put together a winning streak in hopes of securing a spot in the playoffs.
  • Four games back of the final playoff spot, the Heat will face three teams currently on the playoff bubble, starting with the Bisons this weekend.

Senior leadership:

  • Senior player's Ann Richards and Aidan Lea have done their best trying to keep the Heat above water in the hunt for that last playoff spot as the two both have over 100 kills and have combined to rack up 48 service aces and 81 blocks between the two of them.
  • The other senior on the team, libero Sophia Furlan, had her best game of the season last weekend against Calgary as she picked up 14 digs in the four-set match against her hometown team.

Head to head with the Bisons: (11-3 in Canada West regular season, 2-0 in postseason)

  • These two programs became very familiar with each other last season as they played four consecutive times at the end of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs, all in Kelowna.
  • While they split the regular season matchups last year, the Heat captured two straight games against the Bisons in the best-of-three CW quarterfinals in Kelowna.

Scouting Manitoba

Up and down season so far:

  • This season for the Bisons has had a little bit of everything, as they are winners of three of their past four games, but also had a stretch where they won just one set in four matches and currently sit at 6-8 this season.
  • The schedule has been tough so far as they had to play three teams that all played in the U SPORTS national championships last year March, in back-to-back-to-back weekends in November (at UBC, Alberta, and at Calgary).
  • Home court has been much kinder to Manitoba so far this season as they are 5-3 at home compared to just 1-5 on the road.

Players to watch:

  • Libero Cassie Bujan is on pace to have the second most digs in a season in Canada West history, as the senior currently has 243 through the first 14 matches. The senior has had at least 10 digs in all but one conference match so far this season, including six games with 20+ digs.
  • Jocelyn Koswin and Laura Findlay are the leading attackers for the Bisons, as both have over 100 kills on the year. The two also have a combined 39 service aces and 52 blocks.
