PREVIEW: Home and home with TRU on tap

What you need to know

  • The Heat are still the hottest team in Canada West, riding an eight-match winning streak and just being named the top of the U SPORTS Top 10 poll for the second week running.
  • They locked up a playoff spot with a pair of wins last weekend against visiting Winnipeg, and are guaranteed at least one postseason match on home court.
  • With four matches to go the Heat women are just one match and two points back of the Canada West-leading Calgary Dinos (17-3) for a second regular season championship in three seasons.

Players to watch:

Sara McCreary's reign atop the ladder of Canadian setters remains intact, as she is still ranked first for both Canada West and U SPORTS in assists per set, averaging 10.33.

Aidan Lea's hitting percentage of .362 is the second-best in the conference, and is a signifier of the increasingly prominent role that she has had in the Heat's success this season.

Erin Drew is ranked 4th in Canada West with 1.22 blocks per set, which is also good for 6th overall in U SPORTS.

Team outlook:

- With a pair of wins this weekend the Heat could potentially overtake the conference #1 Calgary Dinos, though with the Dinos taking on the MacEwan Griffins (2-18) it will take quite an upset to see the Heat move up to the top of the conference this weekend.

- The Heat continue to be the best hitting team in Canada West. Their team hitting percentage of .237 is the best in the conference, and their kills per set average (13.14) has them second-best, just behind UBC (13.26).

- The Heat are also the highest-scoring team in the conference, holding a conference-best 17.5 points per set, while the WolfPack sit sixth in the category with an average of 15.4.

Presidents Cup

- Volleyball will be the final portion of the Kelowna Kamloops university competition of the Presidents' Cup between the schools. The Cup is handed out at the end of every season for the cumulative best school in head-to-head results– in each gender- of Canada West competition.

- The women's Cup has already been earned by TRU for the 2017/18 season.

- Last season UBC Okanagan won the Cup on the women's side and TRU took the men's Cup. 2018 Scoring Matrix | Full History

Head-to-head with the WolfPack: (10-2 in Canada West regular season)

1-1 in 11/12; 2-0 in 12/13; 2-0 in 13/14; 2-0 in 14/15; 2-0 in 15/16; 1-1 in 16/17

- In the twelve matches between the Heat and the WolfPack, TRU's two wins came in the first (Feb. 10, 2012) and the most recent match (Feb. 18, 2017).

- Having only made the playoffs in the same season twice (2015/16 & 2016/17), the Heat and the 'Pack have yet to meet in the postseason.

Scouting Thompson Rivers:

- The WolfPack are currently 10th in the Canada West standings with a conference record of 7-13. Their 14 points put them four back of three teams ahead of them, meaning there is still an outside chance that they could finish in a playoff spot.

- They lost their last two matches, against Calgary last weekend, and have won two of their last ten matches dating back to December 2, 2017.

Impact players:

- Outside hitter Yevgeniya Nyukhalova is leading the conference in kills to this point, with 310. She is also near the top for kills per set, with her average of 3.97 putting her second.

- Rachel Windhorst is also near the top in Canada West for total kills, with her 289 kills being the fourth-most.

New additions:

Anastasiia Muzyka / S / 1 / Azerail Baku, Azerbaijan /  Gymnasium #14 Poltava
