CALGARY – The UBC Okanagan women's soccer team fell 5-0 to the No. 7 team in the country, the University of Calgary Dinos, on Thursday evening.
In the 23rd minute, the possession tilted in the home team's favour when Calgary opened the scoring. A strike coming off the foot of Kelsie MacDonald went off the fingertips of a leaping Heat keeper, Iona Lawson.
Once the first goal of the season was put in, the Dinos looked like they found their footing with a second goal coming two minutes later when MacDonald put a perfect ball across to Montana Leonard, putting her first goal of the campaign home.
The Calgary pair of Leonard and MacDonald exchanged one more goal each to make it 4-0 going into the half.
The Dinos didn't show any signs of slowing down coming out of the break as just five minutes into the second half MacDonald put a loose ball home for the hat trick resulting from a set piece fed in by Amy Mikuska.
After the fifth goal of the match play settled down as both teams exchanged chances but the two keepers were able to keep the ball out of the back of the net ending the game 5-0 in favour of the home team.
Heat goalkeeper, Iona Lawson, faced relentless offensive pressure but ended the match with a total of nine solid saves in Dinosaur Field.
The next game for Calgary will come on Saturday against Thompson Rivers University. Kick-off is set for noon at Dinosaur Field.
The Heat will fly out to Prince George next to face UNBC Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.
