RUBGY 7s | Edmonton | Day 2 | Vikes claim Edmonton tournament

EDMONTON – Paige Farries scored a pair of tries late in the first half, leading the University of Victoria to a 24-10 win over the host Alberta Pandas in the tournament final, Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.

The Vikes scored three tries in the first half, before adding a fourth in the second, en route to the 14-point win. Victoria finished the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record, winning the season-opening tournament in Edmonton for the third time in four years.

"We didn't have a lot of time to prepare, based on mainly weather and the short turnaround from school into this tournament, but we improved each game, we continued to raise the level and had some really outstanding performances from all thirteen players, so I'm really happy," said Vikes head coach Brittany Waters.

"[Paige] has so much experience, and just continues to get better as an athlete. She knows how to show up, she knows how to perform, and her speed is world class. When she has time and space, she's unstoppable."

Victoria advanced to Sunday afternoon's final after an incredibly tight 10-7 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

Alberta, meanwhile, earns their highest ever finish in their own event, surpassing the third-place finish from 2017 with their second place showing this weekend. The Pandas upset the previously undefeated UBC Thunderbirds 22-10 in the semifinal, before losing for the second time to Victoria this weekend in the final.

"Our game plan really just allowed my team to set me free. Holes were opening up because of those deceptive running lines and the agility that we displayed," said Farries, who finished the weekend with four tries in five matches. "Honestly, I've never seen this tournament run so well, and the level of 7s is just going up and up in Canada West."

After losing to UBC 17-14 on Saturday, Lethbridge exacted some revenge in the third place match, knocking off the Thunderbirds with a 15-12 win. The Pronghorns scored a try with just 2:15 left, holding off the final T-Birds surge.

After a disappointing two-loss day on Saturday, the Calgary Dinos bounced back with a pair of wins on Sunday, capturing fifth with a 38-5 win over Trinity Western.

Fraser Valley placed 7th with a 32-7 win over the UBC Okanagan Heat.

The Rugby 7s season will continue in two weeks, with the UBC Thunderbirds hosting the second tournament in Vancouver.
