RUBGY 7s | UBC | Day 2 | Victoria takes UBC tournament

In the semifinals, the team from Victoria defeated the University of Alberta Pandas 17-12 in a back-and-forth affair that saw a late try by Ashah Payson, with the clock at zero, to seal the win for her team.

"We had some very close games in this tournament. It was great to have all 14 of our athletes be able to get in and perform well," Vikes coach Brittany Waters said of her squad's effort this weekend.

In the final, the Vikes had a rematch against the host UBC Thunderbirds, who they defeated 14-12 on Saturday. The game on Sunday wasn't as close as two early scores by Victoria gave them a lead they would not relinquish.

"UBC is so great at moving the ball, we knew we needed to be better than we were yesterday," Waters said.

The T-Birds reached the finals on the strength of Shoshanah Seumanutafa, as the third-year players recorded three tries in their semifinal victory over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. This weekend was an improvement for the 'Birds as they got a much-needed 10 points after finishing in fourth the stop prior.

"Generally, we were pretty inconsistent. We had some really good games and some pretty average ones. We played really well this morning against a great Lethbridge team. It's just finding that consistency," UBC head coach Dean Murten said.

On the consolation side of the draw, the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat for seventh place. The University of Calgary Dinos knocked off the Trinity Western University Spartans in the fifth-place game. It wasn't all bad news for the Pandas as they were to claim a third-place finish, defeating the Pronghorns in the bronze medal game.

The eight teams are back in action on February 29 and March 1, as the University of Victoria plays host to the final leg of the Canada West Women's Rugby 7s series.

The Vikes, with a maximum 30 points, lead Alberta in the series standings by eight heading into the final weekend of play. UBC is third with 20 points, while Lethbridge is two back with 18, followed by Calgary (12), Trinity Western (8), Fraser Valley (4) and UBC Okanagan (2).
