SASKATOON – Strong shooting from the No. 1 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies took down the UBC Okanagan Heat (101-39) inside the PAC on Friday night.
A dominant first quarter put a gap between the two teams that the Heat were never able to recover from.
With the score (5-4) in favour of the Huskies early, the home team went on a dominant (21-4) run to end the frame. That streak was keyed by six points from fifth-year Vera Crooks and four three-pointers coming from three different players.
A pair of players finished with double-doubles for the Huskies. Summer Masikewich led the way with 22 points and 12 rebounds while Libby Epoch picked up a double-double thanks to 11 points and 12 assists.
It was a display in depth of scoring that really shone for the hosts however. Sabine Dukate (14), Crooks (12), Kyla Shand (11) and Megan Ahlstrom all finished with double-digit point totals.
Saskatchewan held a significant advantage in both shooting percentage (48.8-23) and in forcing turnovers (26-9) on the night.
With the win the Huskies move their Canada West record to (16-1) while the Heat fall to (2-17).
These two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon inside the PAC with a scheduled start time of 5 p.m. For the Heat it will be the final game of their 2019-20 campaign while Saskatchewan will travel to Edmonton next week for a pair of games against the Pandas.
