Tough competition in Montreal at Redbird Classic for Heat women

Montreal, QB - In their first significant preseason action of the new season, the Heat women's basketball team would travel to Montreal for three games against some of the best teams in all of the U SPORTS in the annual McGill Redbird Classic.

The opening matchup would pin the Heat against the host team, the McGill University Martlets on Friday and while the Heat fell by a final score of 96-51, for UBCO there were plenty of positives to draw on, including the team shooting 42% from the field which is well above last season average of 33%. It would be veteran forward Jordan Korol leading the way for the Heat as she finished with 13 points and five rebounds in just 24 minutes of action.

The following day, the women would matchup with the Bishop's Gaiters of the RSEQ Conference, and would fall once again by a score of 80-39 in Montreal. Second year Nursing student Brianna Falk would come off the bench to lead the Heat with 10 points in the game, and would just miss out on a double-double as she finished with nine rebounds in the contest.

In the final game of the preseason trip, the Heat would face off against the Ryerson Rams looking to capture their first win of the trip. Although three Heat players finished in double-figures, UBCO would fall to the sharp-shooting rams 97-56. Guard Vanessa Botteselle would have her best performance of the trip against Ryerson, finishing with 12 points. Forwards Jordan Korol and Anastasia Evans would be the other two players in double-figures, finishing with 10 points each.

"This was a great opportunity for us to compete against some of the top competition in the country, it was nice to see our compete level rise each game and have stretches where we matched the intensity of the game. Our energy on the bench was great, and Katie Punia really sparked us when she was on the floor with here consistent hustle play."

The Heat will play two games this weekend for their final preseason action when they host the UNBC Timberwolves. Tip-off on Friday at 2 p.m. and then again on Saturday at noon.

The Canada West season will open Friday, October 26th in Langley at Trinity Western, their home opener is on Friday, November 2nd when they host the Brandon Bobcats. Tip-off on both Friday nights is at 6 p.m.
