PREVIEW: Three Heat men are off to Ontario for U SPORTS National Championship

Kelowna, BC - The men's and women's cross country teams will face a step up in competition this weekend when they travel to the U SPORTS National Championship for the first time in their programs history.

The races will take place in Kingston, Ontario hosted by Queens University and the course will be 10km long for the men and the women's race will be 8km.

The Guelph Gryphons have been the undisputed kings of men's and women's cross country in Canada in recent years as they captured 12 straight titles on the women's side before Toronto got the win last year. Their men's team has also won 10 of the last 12 team championships including eight in a row at one point.

Men's team outlook:

Three men will travel to Ontario as individuals competing for the Heat as Michael Mitchell, Owen Harris and Turner Woodroff will look to impress on the national stage. Mitchell is the veteran of the group, in his fourth year of eligibility while Harris is in his second. The Kelowna product, Woodroff is in his rookie season with the Heat team.

Mitchell has improved every year at the CCAA national championship, last year finishing 13th, equaling the best result for an individual male runner from UBC Okanagan. This year Mitchell has ran faster in every race then he did a year ago and will be at his best for the championships.

Coach's notes on the men:

"Mike, Owen, and Turner have all had a smooth build up to Nationals and are looking forward to the challenge of competing at Nationals."

"None of the men have raced on the course previously.  We do however have one athlete on the team who has raced the course Jacob Harris.  He has been able to give some course descriptions.  The walk through will be more important for the men as they try and get a feel for the course the day beforehand."

"The weather looks decent in the forecast with rain the day before.  If the course remains wet overnight then this course has a reputation of getting quite slippery when muddy."
