PREVIEW: Heat open up Canada West season on the road against MacEwan

What you need to know

  • The Heat men will open up their 2018-19 Canada West campaign on the road this weekend in Edmonton as they face off against the MacEwan Griffins.
  • These two teams are very familiar with each other as they played at the end of September at the UBCO Fall Invitational, with the Griffins picking up the win.
  • It will be a fairly new-look team for the Heat this season as they debut six rookies along with four transfer students.

Busy preseason schedule:

  • Head coach Brad Hudson and his team have been extremely busy in recent weeks, playing in seven preseason matches at both their own UBCO Fall Invitational, and the annual Blue Team Cup which was hosted by Trinity Western.
  • The new-look Heat team would defeat the defending conference championship in the Trinity Western Spartans at the Blue Team Cup, and would follow that up with another win against the Montreal Carabins.
  • The only loss of the Blue Team Cup for the Heat came against the defending U SPORTS National Champions in the UBC Thunderbirds in a five-set thriller.
  • The Heat would also capture a win against the Mount Royal Cougars to finish the tournament with a 3-1 record.

Players to keep an eye on:

  • Two transfer students headline the Heat attack to start the season as both Matt Aubrey and Brennan Goski will likely get the starts at either outside hitter position. Both Goski and Aubrey came from the University of Regina following the programs discontinuation.
  • Aubrey is a left-handed right side from Brisbane, Australia and has plenty of international experience as a member of the National Team. He was also named to the Canada West All-Rookie team in his first year with the Cougars.
  • Goski is a product of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and will look to solidify himself as the go-to option on the left side for the Heat.

Head to head with the Griffins: (7W - 1L)

  • The Heat have owned the matchup so far with MacEwan, as their seven wins in eight matches is the best winning percentage against any Canada West opponent.
  • Last season it was the Heat who picked up both victories in four sets on the road in Edmonton.

Scouting MacEwan:

Last years finish:

  • The Griffins would struggle to pick up wins last season, as they would finish with a 3-21 record to finish in 12th spot in the Canada West and would miss the playoffs.

Key additions:

  • David Morgan / LB / 3 / Brisbane, AUS / Grande Prairie Regional College
  • Mark Ritter / OH / 4 / Edmonton, AB / Red Deer College
  • Keenan Koss / MB / 1 / Calgary, AB / Ernest Manning
  • Dominic Losier / OH / 1 / Calgary, AB / Ernest Manning

Player to watch:

  • Middle blocker Max Vriend will be the key veteran player for the team from Edmonton, as the former U SPORTS and Canada West All-Rookie team member is one of the best blockers in the conference and can also produce on the offensive end.
