KELOWNA, BC – The UBC Okanagan Heat played a solid match to open the season defeating the United Rugby Club 22-15 Saturday afternoon in their BC U23 conference match.

Trevor Yip led the team with a pair of scores at the Parkinson Recreation Centre field in Kelowna contributing half of the UBCO tries on the day in the victory.

Kai Duchnycz and Daniel Merenyi scored the other tries for UBC Okanagan with Dom Haynes connecting on one covert.

Yip was a force throughout the match as the fourth year Human Kinetics student's combination of speed and power created havoc on both sides for United.

Yip opened the scoring for UBC with United matching with a try of their own. United converted a penalty to go up 8-5 for their only lead for the match.

Merenyi powered in his try with the Haynes conversion to close out the first half 12-8 in favour of the Heat.

Kai Duchnycz made an outstanding defensive play blocking United's attempt at a clearance kick he then pick up the ball and walked in for the score.

The final score of the match came about halfway through the second half when Trevor Yip touched down for his second of the match to give UBCO their largest lead of the match 22-8.

With the counter score United quickly retaliated with a try of their own and nailed the conversion to close within one score 22-15 where the Heat defence held strong to keep that score as a final.
