Quiet preseason:

  • The Heat played just three exhibition games leading up to this weekend, but their schedule featured several scrimmages against top competition.
  • Their two exhibition games against Canada West competition took place in Kamloops two weekends ago.
  • At the TRU tournament, both of the UBCO matchups would be tight throughout. The Heat fell 80-76 to the UFV Cascades before picking up an 80-77 overtime victory against the MacEwan Griffins the following day.
  • The only other matchup was a scrimmage against SFU last Friday with no final score being recorded.

New season, new team:

  • After the graduation of the programs leading scorer, Aldrich Berrios, along with the departure of last season's leading scorer, Triston Matthews, the Heat are going to have to find some different offensive weapons.
  • Canada West All-Rookie team member,  Hafith Moallin, will look to anchor the backcourt along with returning two-guard Philip OkanlawonSpencer Thomas returns to bolster the backcourt after a year off.
  • In the frontcourt, Owen Keyes makes a return to anchor the middle. He'll share time in the post with transfer Sam Matice, a seven-footer from South Georgia Tech.

Head to head with Manitoba: (0-5)

  • These two teams last met up back in the fall of 2017, with the Bison' capturing both matchups by double-digits. The only time these teams have played in Winnipeg was in December of 2012. The Bisons held off the Heat 79-68.

Scouting Manitoba

Preseason recap:

  • The Bisons played seven games in their exhibition schedule, going 5-2 with both defeats being by single-digits.
  • A high-flying offensive team, Manitoba has scored at least 70 points in all but one of their games so far. Very explosive, the Bisons scored 107 points against Brandon last weekend, at the Lea Marc Invitational.

Impact player:

  • Shifty point guard Rashawn Browne returns for his senior season. He comes into the season with a long list of accomplishments already to his name.
  • Browne led the conference in assists in 2017-18 and was named an All-Star last season when he averaged over 16 points a contest.
  • The product of Toronto has the ability to go off at any time, last year he had a superb shooting night. Against Brandon, he went eight-of-nine from deep in a 32 point performance.
