RECAP: Fast start from UFV downs Heat

Kelowna, BC - Triston Matthews would finish with 15 points and six rebounds but the UBC Okanagan Heat dropped the first of a weekend set with the UFV Cascades 92-62 on Friday night.

The Cascades would shoot 48% from the field on the night, including making 13 triples as the Heat were not able to keep pace with the squad from Fraser Valley.

27 points in the opening quarter would allow the Cascades to jump out to a 16 point lead after just ten minutes and UBCO was never able to cut into the deficit.

It was a balanced attack all night for the visitors as they had three players in double-figures, and three more with nine points. All 12 players on the Cascades roster would score at least two points in the win.

Matthews finished with 15 points, including three triples to lead the Heat attack in the game, along with six boards. Both Jacob Stokker and Aldrich Berrios also finished in double figures with 10 and 11 points respectively.

The offensive glass was an issue all night for the Heat as they allowed the Cascades to haul in 16 offensive rebounds in the game, and 45 total boards.

With the win, the Cascades improve to 7-4 on the season while UBCO drops their third straight to fall to 5-6 as we near the midway mark.

These two teams will close out their 2018 calendar season tomorrow night in the UBC Okanagan gym with tip slated for 7 p.m. PST on

While the Heat have been a little undersized all year coach Ken Olynyk noted his team has to do a better job on the glass. "I think we just got to try and be more physical on the glass, get a body on a body and chase after loose balls so hopefully we do a better job of that tomorrow."

First half:

It was all Cascades from the opening tip as they scored the opening basket and would jump out to 10-2 just four minutes into the game. This early surge would allow them to build a 27-11 lead after the opening 10 minutes in the Furnace.

This 16 point lead would balloon to 20 after the second, as UFV never let the Heat back into the game thanks to a free-flowing attack. The Cascades would snag 10 offensive rebounds in the half which let to 20 second chance points.

Second half:

The offensive onslaught continued by UFV in the third as they scored 29 points in the frame to continue to build their lead. UBCO found their shooting stroke in the quarter as they scored 23 points in the 10 minutes of action, their best output in any quarter on the night. The fourth quarter was fairly uneventful as nearly all starts for both teams sat the remained of the game.
