RECAP: Strong third quarter not enough for Heat

Winnipeg, MB - A third quarter offensive explosion was not enough for the Heat men's basketball team as they fell 67-54 to the hometown Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday night. The Heat would score 25 points in the third frame to go into the fourth quarter down by just five but were unable to complete the comeback.

With the loss the Heat fall to 2-17 on the season and were unable to snap their 15 game losing streak. The Wesmen improved to 9-10 on the season and are still in a fight for the final playoff spot in the conference. These two teams will meet up in the final conference game for both teams on Friday night with tip-off going at 5 p.m. PST.

First half:

Aldrich Berrios would start the game off hot for the Heat, as he hit a deep three just a minute in for the games first points. The two teams would go back and forth early in the first, with the Wesmen holding a slight advantage at 12-8. The final four minutes of the first quarter was all Winnipeg, as they used efficient offense to go on a 10-3 run to finish out the opening 10 minutes of play. The pace of the game would slow down in the second frame, as their was only 25 combined points between the two teams. The Heat deficit would be cut to just nine after Berrios made another shot from long-range but the Heat would go stone cold for the final six minutes of the first half, as they scored just three points in that span. The Wesmen jumped all over the visitors poor shooting, as they would lead 36-22 going into halftime. The Wesmen would shot over 47% (16 of 34) from the field in the opening 20 minutes while the Heat shot 24% (8 of 34).

Second half:

The Heat would come out on fire in the third quarter as they scored the first six points of the second half to cut the deficit to just six at 36-30 with eight minutes left in the third. The Wesmen would come back with a run of their own in the following minutes but back to back threes from Berrios and Triston Matthews cut the deficit back down to six. The sharp-shooting Berrios would make two more threes in the third quarter and with ten minutes left, the Heat were down just five 52-47. The offense would dry up in the final quarter for UBCO, as they didn't score until the 5:39 mark but were still down just nine. This would be as close as the visitors would get, as they were outscored 15-7 in the final frame to fall 67-54.
