The University of British Columbia
A message from Tom Huisman, UBCO Director of Athletics and Recreation.

Hello, and thank you for your patience as we navigate the many challenges of COVID-19 virus and its impact within the UBCO Heat family and our broader community of supporters throughout and beyond the Okanagan.

As I’m sure you are aware, the Office of the Provincial Medical Health Officer, BC Centre for Disease Control and Ministry of Health has recommended the immediate cancellation or postponement until further notice of all events with more than 50 people in attendance.

In accordance with that recommendation, UBC is cancelling all such events that are organized by students, faculty and staff.

As a result, we are postponing the 2020 Athletic Scholarship Breakfast, presented by RBC, and will look for a suitable date in the fall when our students are hopefully back on campus.

We would like to offer the following options for your event ticket:

  • We are happy to issue you a full refund for any reason. Please note the tax receipt you have received will not be valid.
  • If you would like to donate the value of your ticket purchase to the Athletic Scholarship Endowment Fund, we will issue you a full receipt with our appreciation (and provide a complimentary invitation to the fall event that is anticipated).

Please accept my thanks for your continued support of our UBCO Heat student-athletes, and we wish you and your family all the best during this difficult time.

Supporting Student Athletes in the Okanagan - Be a part of the legacy.

2020's Featured speaker: Malindi Elmore

Malindi Elmore’s Olympic journey is a very unique and inspirational three-part story that continues to be written.

Already having participated in the 2004 Olympics in Athens as a 1500m runner for Canada, followed by a short and successful stint as a professional triathlete, Malindi finds herself on the doorstep of a second Olympic Games; this time in 2020, but in the longest distance of them all, the marathon.

To say this was all part of the master plan for the mother of two young boys who hung up her track spikes in 2012 couldn’t be farther from the truth. The truth, however, lies in a love and passion for running and keeping fit, an athlete’s mindset, and a community of support that kept the Olympic door open, even though she thought it had long since closed.

Malindi’s story is one we all should hear, be motivated by, and take pride in as she is a true product of the Okanagan, and a testament that we can all achieve great things, be it on the Olympic stage, in our jobs, and in our personal lives.

2020's Student speaker: Nicholas Reitsma

Men's Soccer,
UBC Okanagan Heat

Nicholas Reitsma is the third-year goalkeeper of the men's soccer team and is an honours student in the Faculty of Health and Social Development working towards his degree in Human Kinetics. This past year the Academic All-Canadian had an award winning season taking home the Canada West Student-Athlete Community Service award after an outstanding 2019 season.

The local Reitsma started all 16 matches for UBCO and he was in goal for every minute of every game. He led the conference in minutes played and save percentage, and his six shutouts were third-best in the conference this season. His six wins and 68 saves this year are both new single-season school records.

A strong believer in spreading the word on mental health issues, the Aberdeen Hall graduate has taken it upon himself to spread his own message about his mental health struggles with the goal of providing support for those in a similar position.
