A solid start to the season for the Heat’s third-year central defender Sam McDonald. His two goals in the opening weekend helped the UBCO men’s soccer team earn a split at home against the UNBC Timberwolves.
In Friday’s conference opener, it was the Kelowna product who netted the eventual game-winner. McDonald sizzled home a penalty kick in the ninth minute for the Heat’s second goal, then it was his presence on the backline that allowed UBCO to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
On Saturday, it was McDonald once again finding the back of the net. His second marker of the season, matching a career-high, gave the Heat an early (1-0) lead. UBCO held that lead until the 70th minute when the Timberwolves evened the match. UNBC scored once more and the home squad was unable to match, eventually falling 2-1 for the weekend split.
The Heat continue their homestand with Victoria and UBC scheduled for matches in Kelowna this Saturday (Aug 31) and Sunday (Sep 1). Both matches with 3 p.m. start times.
