Hunt’s 2—under back nine leads to UBCO win

As BC Rivalry Series wraps up fall schedule, Immaculata's Ethan Hunt captured his first tourney win. His even-par (72) allowed the Heat to lock down the tournament win at the Morgan Creek Golf Course.

With the lowest scoring rate on the team through all eight of the BCRS, Ethan Hunt shot a 34 on the back nine on Surrey's Morgan Creek course on Thursday to hold off all challengers for the tournament win. Marcus Apchin finished tied for ninth along with Brandon Frechette both shot a 5-over (77) finished next on the leaderboard for UBCO. Nik Federko (T14, 78 +6) and Justin Towill (17th, 81 +9) rounded out the squad.

An extremely tightly contested final BCSR event on the team side saw the Heat shot a +16 (304) to fend off both UFV and UBC by a single stroke. Those two schools tied for second with a score of +17 (305).

The day before on the UFV home course, the Chilliwack Golf Club, the Heat squad finished third with a 5-over (293). The home team grabbed second with a 2-under (286) and the Thunderbirds, on Wednesday, ran away with the event with a 13-under (275).

"After a poor showing at Chilliwack's event, it's great as a coach to see your team rebound," explained head coach Clay Stothers. "Finishing third by 18 shots and then to go on to win the next day, it shows a lot of character. One of the leaders of the team contributing to our character is Ethan Hunt. He has been our rock on the team and he finished the season with a 72.37 strokes average with two individual wins and landed fourth in the order of merit, those results are very impressive against this level of competition."

Lefty's ruled the leaderboard for the Heat on Wednesday in Chilliwack. Lefty-swinging rookie, Justin Towill was the top-finisher for UBCO. The OKM grad swung for a 1-under (71) to sit alone in 10th on the leaderboard in the seventh event of the BCRS. Fellow lefty-swinging Heat golfers, Ethan Hunt finished 12th (72, +1), Brandon Frechette T13th (74, +2), and Nik Federko 17th (75, +3) followed Towill on the leaderboard. The lone righty, Marcus Apchin, rounded out the day for UBCO firing a 6-over (78).

With the eight fall BCSR events finished the tightly contested men's side is separated by just 3.5 points between first and third.  UBCO is in third (14) trailing second-place UBC (16.5) by two and a half points and UFV (17.5) by 3.5 points.

Individually, for the Order of Merritt, if they were to hand out awards now, the Heat have one golfer in the top-5 by average points per round – Ethan Hunt – in fourth. Looking at total points for the OOM, two of the top-5 with Ethan Hunt (483.25) and Justin Towill (399.3) sitting in fourth and fifth respectively.

The schools hope to schedule an additional 12 events in the spring of 2021 to complete the first-ever BC Rivalry Series
